This treatment, which is available for both dogs and cats, serves more than one purpose. For all dogs and cats, the solution provides protection against heartworms, as well as other types of intestinal worms that can make your pet very ill. The other main purpose of this veterinary drug is to serve as a treatment for fleas. If your dog or cat contracts fleas, this treatment will kill fleas quickly. In addition to these two main purposes, this drug can also be used to prevent whipworms in dogs and treat ear mites in cats.		Like most other drugs, Advantage Multi must be prescribed by your veterinarian. This is an important medication to discuss at your routine veterinarian visit, preferably at your pet's annual checkup. The drug comes in two variations: one for cats and one for dogs. Each one is assigned a specific weight, so you need to know into which weight range your cat or dog fits so you are sure to get the right one. The cat version comes in three weight ranges, while the dog version comes in five weight ranges. The dosage is precise - you must know your pet's weight to a tenth of a pound. It is important that you also use the proper one for a cat or dog.

Advantage Multi is a topical solution you apply directly to your pet's skin. Regardless of what reason you are using the medication, you must apply the solution between your pet's shoulder blades. If your pet is small enough, hold it in your lap with his head facing away from you. Spread the fur at its shoulders and squeeze the contents of the applicator onto the skin between the shoulders. If you have a larger dog, you may need to apply it while your dog stands in front of you. After application, it is important to make sure your pet doesn't lick the area for at least 30 minutes. The drug must be administered once a month for the best results.		When you use Advantage Multi, especially for the first time, you must watch your pet for changes to ensure your pet doesn't have an adverse reaction. In cats, negative reactions can include excessive sleep, agitation, hiding, pacing and increased grooming. For dogs, potential side effects can include decreased appetite, scratching, rubbing and hyperactivity.
