Carprofen
Carprofen is a generic non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is used to relieve pain and to reduce inflammation in dogs with osteoarthritis. As it relieves pain, it is also occasionally prescribed to help control pain associated with orthopedic or soft tissue surgery. Carprofen works by inhibiting the COX-2 enzyme responsible for eliciting localized inflammatory responses.
Carprofen is used in a variety of prescription medications and is one of the more diverse NSAIDs, as it acts on the COX-2 enzyme as opposed to the COX-1 enzyme. The latter of these enzymes produces prostaglandins but is also essential to both healthy gastrointestinal and healthy renal functions. By acting on only the COX-2 enzyme, carprofen permits the production of these important chemicals, leaving the renal and gastrointestinal system intact and unaffected.

Dosing
- Follow the directions given by your veterinarian to determine the appropriate dosage
- Recommended dosage for oral administration to dogs is 2 mg/lb of body weight daily
- Total daily dose may be administered as mg/lb of body weight daily or divided into two doses
- For control of post-operative pain, administer dose approximately 2 hours before the procedure

Side Effects
- As with all NSAIDs, side effects can occur with or without warning and in rare cases prove fatal, look for the following side effects that may relate to issues with the stomach, liver, or kidney:o Vomiting, jaundice, or changes in : appetite, bowel movements, behavior, drinking habits, urination habits (frequency, color or smell), or skin (redness, scabs, or scratching)
- Stop administering carprofen and contact your veterinarian immediately if you think your dog is experiencing side effects
