Fleas can be a big problem for your pet, especially if your dog spends a lot of time outdoors or around other dogs that may be infested. If your dog does contract fleas, however, there are ways you can get rid of them. One of the recent additions to the successful treatment of a flea infestation is a drug called Comfortis, which recently received approval from the FDA.

Uses of Comfortis   Prescription Information
The main purpose of this drug is to get rid of flea infestations on dogs. However, it will not only kill any adult fleas that are present on your dog, it will also help prevent future infestation on your dog as long as you continue to administer the medication. Because fleas can lay a large number of eggs, it can be really difficult to get rid of them. With the use of this drug, though, the fleas are killed quickly, which leaves them little time to lay their eggs, thus reducing the longevity of the infestation.   Comfortis is available for all dogs that are at least 14 weeks of age. Because the dosage relies upon the weight of your dog, it is important to take a trip to the veterinarian for a prescription. If your dog has fleas already, be sure to let the office know so they can help prevent the spread of the fleas to other animals at the office. The lowest dosage of the pill is available for dogs that weigh less than 10 pounds with the highest dose for dogs weighing between 61 and 120 pounds. You need to be sure you are using the proper dosage for your dog.

Administration   Side Effects
This drug is one of the easiest types to give to your dog. The pills come in a beef-flavored, chewable tablet you can give to your dog like any other treat. All you need to do is give your dog one pill at the same time each month. The medication is effective for the entire month, killing any existing fleas and preventing new infestations. Unlike many other flea treatments, you don't need to isolate your dog or worry about the medication coming off in the bath. It will remain effective the entire month and will go into effect within 30 minutes of administration.   Most dogs who take Comfortis don't see any negative side effects from the drug. However, it is important to watch for any changes any time your dog takes a new medication. Some of the reported side effects for this drug can include diarrhea, vomiting, decrease in appetite and behavior changes. Any time your dog acts differently or experiences new symptoms after starting a drug, it is best to check with your veterinarian to ensure the medication isn't reacting poorly to your pet.

Fleas don't have to be a big problem to get rid of. Comfortis gives you an easy way to get rid of infestation without having to isolate your pet or use messy treatments. You simply need to give your pet one pill a month and the flea problem will resolve and not return.
