As in humans, oral problems begin when bacteria (aerobic bacteria) combine with saliva and food particles, forming a sticky substance called plaque that forms between the teeth and gums. Plaque, which is invisible, is an ideal medium for the growth of bacteria. Ultimately, the bacteria irritate the gums, which become red, tender and swollen. This condition is known as gingivitis and is reversible through prompt treatment by a veterinarian. One of the first sign of oral disease is bad breath (halitosis).
