Glucosamine for Dogs

One way to help dogs suffering with arthritis is to give them the supplements glucosamine and chondroitin. Glucosamine is a supplement that helps heal joints, relieve inflammation and improve their function. Chondroitin occurs naturally in cartilage, and taking it helps to slow cartilage loss or even encourage new cartilage growth. The supplements are normally taken together.

There are many advantages to using glucosamine for dogs.

It is readily absorbed by their bodies and is spread to joints easily. A similar substance forms naturally in joints. It is used to cushion joints which leads to them functioning better and keeps them intact.
This means less pain for

pain.

There are similar advantages to using glucosamine chondroitin for dogs.

The chondroitin already present in joints provides structure to them. It also holds nutrients and water, and it allows new nutrients to penetrate into cartilage. This is important because blood does not enter cartilage. As arthritis erodes cartilage, the chondroitin originally present is lost. Supplements replace this naturally occurring chondroitin and help encourage healthy joints and maybe even promote bone growth.

Giving a dog these supplements

can be difficult, especially if it is in pill form. Crushing the pill and mixing it with food can be helpful, but often much of the supplement is not ingested. A good method of giving dogs these supplements is to buy the liquid version and pour it over food. Most dogs will not mind the taste and may think of it as a treat. However, sometimes dogs don't like the taste of the liquid. Another option is chewable tablets, but these face similar problems if the dog does not want to eat them. Usually, one form or another will work.

Special attention

should be given to quality of supplements purchased for dogs. Glucosamine and chondroitin made for a person's consumption are normally made from high quality ingredients, but the supplements made for dogs are meant to be absorbed by dogs, so they are more suitable. It is also important to only buy these supplements from trusted sources such as your vet or well-known stores.

Glucosamine and chondroitin can also cause side effects in dogs.

The most prevalent are digestive issues like upset stomach, gas, diarrhea or vomiting. Often a lower dose can help stop these problems. Glucosamine can be made from shellfish, so allergic reactions causing rashes or short breath may occur. In humans, these two supplements may increase resistance to insulin. The research on this topic is incomplete but when giving these supplements to dogs with diabetes, it is wise to keep a close eye on them.
