Hope

Breed: Shih Tzu
Location: Virgina

Hope was found along the interstate and brought to a shelter. The shelter contacted us and asked for our help or she would be euthanized. This is a happy, darling baby, full of life and joy. However, she has no use of her 2 back legs. In order for her to get around, she hops and drags herself. The vet diagnosed the handicap as quadricep contracture' in both legs. There are surgical procedures available to correct this situation. First, however, she must have physical therapy and it will be our first line of defense. It seems like a deformity as she can't bend or move her legs and they stick out to the side. The courage, strength and loving disposition of this precious baby even after all she has been through is something we can all learn from.

Cross is a purebred English Springer Spaniel who was one of 41 dogs rescued from a free range puppy mill in Missouri that were brought to Washington State in March 2009 (there were 200 dogs rescued in all). The dogs were found to be living off of rocks, dirt, and a horse that had been dead for two weeks (YUCK!). They were dirty and infested with ticks and fleas. Before being transported to WA, Cross was neutered, wherein they discovered he had an inguinal hernia- his intestines were in his scrotum.

Calvin was rescued by a wonderful organization that saved him and his siblings from gang members who were killing newborn puppies for kicks. He was pretty sick at 5 weeks old but grew to be stronger almost instantly. He is a complete joy and has a unique and quirky personality. He loves chew toys and his favorite is a basketball we keep in the yard.

Two months ago, quite by accident, I met Milo, a shelter dog waiting to be adopted. It was love at first sight and I had the same immediate instinctive connection with him that I had felt when I first met Zoe, nearly eleven years ago.

We were adopted a few years ago by a near feral cat we named "Moody" for some obvious reasons. It took quite a while for her to accept people and specifically children, probably from years of being chased, harassed and fending for herself.

Breed: Tibetan Spaniel
Submitted by: Laura N.

Lola is 3 years old which is my only baby. She's a Tibetan Spaniel that was breed by Buddhist monks who they served as companions, watched dogs and prized possessions. Known as the "prayer dog" date back to at least 1100 B.C. Lola may be an ancestor to the Pekingese but their origins are very vague which I'm so attached to Lola since I brought her home from the pet store when she was only 2 months old.

Breed: Puggle

Gizmo was born August 18, 2006. When he did something silly...we affectionately called him 'Jerky'. On the web site about a year after getting Gizmo...there was a new litter of puggles. They were born August 18, 2007. One was named Jerky. We looked at each other and knew right away it was meant to be. We immediately contacted them and told them that we...and Gizmo...wanted Jerky to come live here.

Scotty is a rescue from Texas, where he had been hit by a truck on an interstate before being brought to a kill shelter. He had such a wonderful personality that they called the Cairn rescue, which came to get him and found him a new home. He was caravanned up to NJ, where he has lived for 8 years. He had obviously been abused, as loud noises and quick movements caused him to cringe and dive to the floor.
