Meet Red: The Miniature Pinscher who Deserved a Second Chance

Pet of the Week Pet of the Week

Breed Miniature Pinscher
Location Florida
Human Linda Hemphill
Story This is 5 year old “Red”. Red was a rescued Miniature Pinscher as he was found wandering in a trailer park that was closing down for the season. Red was ALL skin and bones when he was found. Every rib stuck out and his 2 hipbones protruded out. People were giving him food, but not shelter. He appeared to have slept underneath someone’s trailer every night. A nice man finally got Red and brought him into Rescue. Oh so friendly was his sticker on his cage at Rescue. But because of the way he “looked” no one wanted to adopt him. Well, I did and I couldn’t be happier! My Vet said he needed good food which he was started on. Apparently he NEVER knew what a bone was because all he did was throw it up in the air and pounce on it like a cat would do to a mouse! It was the funniest thing to watch! A Min-Pin that didn’t know what a bone was...
Unfortunately, two weeks later Red broke both main bones in his right leg. He was chasing a bird (Red chases anything that moves!) and was struck by a speeding car. I called my friend and we flew to the after hours emergency vet in the next town over. We burst into the emergency vet’s office and the vet took Red. They put a cast on his leg and kept him until Monday where they made arrangements for Red to undergo surgery with the orthopedic vet. What a fantastic job the vet did! Today, Red runs like the wind like nothing happened! He is now a “whopping” 8 lbs. and looks like a million dollars. Everyday Red does something to make us smile, and with that smile comes a wet kiss!
Outward appearances mean nothing...look at Red and how he turned out. He has ALL the love he can handle, a big yard to run around and chase anything that moves, the best of foods, and a great vet who just smiles as soon as he sees Red and Red just loves him back. And to think people wouldn’t give him a second chance. Well, their loss is my gain!
