T8 Solution, containing Tetrasodium Edetate (EDTA), is an ideal adjunctive treatment for otitis externa, especially in cases of gram-negative infections such as Pseudomonas spp, Proteus spp, Escherichia Coli, and Klebsiella spp. Frequently, these cases may become chronic and difficult to treat with topical formulations that are currently available because the bacteria associated with these infections develop multiple antibiotic resistance. Also, many antibiotics are inactivated or become less effective at the low pH level found in the exudate commonly associated with cases of gram-negative otitis externa. The low pH in acidifying ear cleansers may also lessen the activity of antibiotics if rinsed prior to application of the medication.
T8 Solution affects the cell membranes of bacteria by chelating minerals such as Calcium and Magnesium, causing the membranes to become more porous, thus allowing the antibiotic to break through the bacteria cellular wall and destroy it.
T8 Solution’s alkaline pH (8.5):
- Increases cell permeability, enhancing the penetration and efficacy of antibiotics.
- Improves the potency of antibiotics that are inactivated or become less effective due to the low pH found in exudate.
T8 Solution contains an antimicrobial/preservative agent to eliminate possible contamination of the solution after administration in the infective ear.
T8 Solution is non-irritating (tonicity of 222 mM, nearly isotonic).
