| Though not as common in dogs and cats as in humans, your pet may develop an infection at some point in its life. Whether the infection is related to an injury or an illness, a trip to the veterinarian can diagnose the problem and medication can be prescribed for your pet to help it get better faster. Clavamox is an antibiotic medication that is made from a combination of amoxicillin and potassium clavulanate. These two medications work together to fight any infection in your pet's system. |

|
Prescriptions |
| This medication is typically prescribed to fight infections that your pet may have developed, such as wounds, respiratory illnesses and urinary infections. This combination of medications work together to battle the source of the infection. It works for all types of infections, such as those in the skin or other soft tissues. This medication is very versatile and works on many different types of infections your pet may acquire. |
|
Clavamox is only available through a prescription from your veterinarian. Overuse of antibiotic drugs can result in ineffectiveness later on when it is needed. Therefore, many veterinarians are very careful about its prescription and use. This antibiotic is available in a range of strengths to meet the needs of any type and severity of infection in your pet. Tablets are available from 62.5 mg through 375 mg and the suspension liquid is available in 15-ml. Your veterinarian will determine the proper dosage based on your animal's weight and information on the infection. |

Side Effects |
| Because Clavamox comes in two different types, you and your veterinarian can choose the one that is easiest for you to give your pet. The medication is available in a tablet if your pet will eat it. You can either place the tablet on the back of the animal's tongue and allow it to swallow the tablet or you can hide it in a piece of cheese or other soft food. If your dog won't take a pill, you can measure and squeeze the dosage into your pet's mouth with a dropper or add it to the food. With either type, the medication should begin taking effect within a few doses, though some pets do take longer to react.

While your pet is taking Clavamox, it is important to watch for changes. Possible side effects of an antibiotic include diarrhea, vomiting and incoordination. If your pet experiences any of these issues, let your veterinarian know. In some cases, an anti-diarrheal may be needed as well. If your pet's infection doesn't go away with the medication and you have finished the prescribed amount, visit your veterinarian for a re-evaluation. In some cases, your veterinarian may prescribe a larger dose for your pet or may possibly try a different antibiotic instead.
If your dog or cat becomes ill or seems to be acting out of the ordinary, it is always best to take a trip to the veterinarian. When an infection occurs, your veterinarian will be able to prescribe an antibiotic, such as Clavamox, to help your pet get better faster so it can return to its normal self. |
