| There will be times in your pet's life when it experiences pain for a variety of reason. While some types of pain are best left unmedicated, others require a prescription. Metacam can help your pet feel better so he doesn't have to suffer through the pain. If your pet is prescribed this medication, it is important to know as much about it as possible. This medication works for both cats and dogs. |
| Uses of Metacam |
|
Prescriptions |
| This medication is categorized as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, or NSAID. This NSAID is mostly used in dogs to treat conditions, such as arthritis or muscle injuries. Anything that can cause inflammation and muscle pain for the dog can be treated with this drug. It can also serve as a fever reducer when necessary. If you have a cat, this drug may be used as a pain reliever after surgery. |
|
If your pet can benefit from the use of Metacam, your veterinarian will prescribe it for your dog or cat. Because of the nature of this type of medication, your veterinarian has to monitor your pet while taking the medication. It is extremely important to make sure your veterinarian is aware of any of the other medications your pet takes to avoid negative interactions between the two drugs. This drug shouldn't be taken with any other form of NSAID. |
| Administration |
|
Side Effects |
| Metacam is available as an oral suspension, which can make it difficult to give to your pet. If your dog or cat is small enough, you can hold your pet on its back between your legs, insert the medicine dropper into its mouth and gently squeeze the medication into the animal's mouth. A larger dog can be more difficult, however. If you can't get the medication into your pet's mouth, you can also mix it in with his food so it is easier to take. Always shake the bottle before giving a dose and use the supplied dropper so the dosing is accurate. In most cases, you will only need to give the medication once a day; however, you should always follow your veterinarian's instructions. |
|
While your pet is taking Metacam, it is important to monitor him for side effects due to the medication. Some of the potential side effects your pet may experience while taking this medication can include loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, jaundice, which is a yellowing of the skin, eyes and gums, bloody or black stools, increased respiration, hot spots or any behavior changes. If your cat or dog experiences any of these or other worrisome changes, it is important to stop the medication immediately and seek guidance from your veterinarian.
No one likes to see their pet suffer from the impact of arthritis, muscle or joint injuries, or surgery. Metacam can provide your pet with the relief it needs to feel better sooner and recover more quickly. Using this type of medication requires the direction of your veterinarian to ensure that the medication does its job without causing any further harm to your pet.
