The World's Ugliest Dog

We’re always eager to make our pets the best they can be, whether it’s the best trained or the most attractive. It gives us a sense of pride to show off the result of our hard work and love. But what about submitting your dog as the ugliest? Every year, hundreds of dogs and their hopeful owners try out to win the title of the World’s Ugliest Dog. For three consecutive years, (2003-2005) one dog has been the undefeated champion- Sam; a pedigreed Chinese crested hairless.

Sam
Meet the World's Ugliest Dog: "I don't think there'll ever be another Sam. Some people would think that's a good thing." Sam has been crowned the ugliest because of his many unattractive features. He made the judges recoil when they first saw him. He has wrinkled, withered, and hanging skin, moles and blackheads, milky white eyes, a lack of fur, few teeth (which are large and crooked), and a lump on his back to top it all off. Despite Sam’s horror film appearance, he was lovingly adopted by his owner, Susie. The love between Sam and Susie caused many people to adopt animals that were initially considered to be ‘un-adoptable.’ The title of 'The World's Ugliest Dog' may seem harsh, but Sam has proven that it doesn’t make a pet any less loveable. Sadly, Sam passed away mid-November of 2005. He leaves behind an amazing legacy. Will there be a dog for 2006 that can live up to the ‘World’s Ugliest Dog’ title? About Chinese Crested Dogs Hairless dogs are spontaneous genetic mutations. They have been reported all over the world, though most common in Central and South America. The Crested dogs have been recorded in China two centuries years ago but it was embraced in Central America. Certian health risks can develop in these dogs, which may have caused Sam's 'ugly' appearance. Here are some of the health concerns:
  • Missing teeth which is connected to the hair loss gene.
  • Missing toenails in the Hairless breed
  • Severe acne
  • Sunburns easily Fierce Competition: Here are few tough competitors from past and other 'ugliest' competitions.
Zippy What a Face! Britain's Ugliest Lambchop
Where do all of these ugly dogs come from? Zippy is also a Chinese Hairless, who came in second to Sam as the World's Ugliest Dog. Billy was voted as Britain's Ugliest Dog. His owner found him as a stray eight years ago. He was voted most ugly for his vampire-like teeth. Lambchop is an English Bulldog from Naples; another 'ugly' contender. Think you have an ugly dog?
