How Does Revolution Work?

Cats and dogs can both become infested with a wide variety of parasites, many of which pose serious health risks. Fleas, ticks, and mites can be incredibly irksome and even act as a catalyst for the spread of disease. Internal parasites such as roundworms, hookworms, and heartworms can be even more dangerous to your pets, potentially damaging their internal organs in a way that can result in death if left untreated.

One of the best ways to protect your pet against a wide spectrum of parasites is with the prescription medication, Revolution. Revolution is available in a myriad of formulations that ensure the proper dosage is available for both cats and dogs of all sizes. This product works to protect a wide variety of parasites that include fleas, ear mites, and heartworms; formulations for dogs also work to combat hookworm, roundworm, whipworm, and sarcoptic mange.

Revolution is available in an easy-to-apply topical formulation that prevents infestation from these pests for up to one month. The medication can also be reapplied each month to ensure that your pet is protected year-round. Simply purchase the correct dosage for your pet and empty the contents of a tube of Revolution onto your pet’s back. The medication is safe for all dogs that are at least 6 weeks old and for all cats that are at least 8 weeks old.

What is the Active Ingredient?

Revolution is formulated with selamectin, which has a unique chemical structure that, when absorbed into your pet’s blood stream, can work to kill heartworm throughout the body. For cats, the concentration can also kill other intestinal worms like hookworms. The blood maintains a concentration of selamectin that also works to kill fleas, ticks, and other blood-sucking insects that ingest the chemical while attempting to feed.

Selamectin works by attacking the nervous system of parasites, mimicking an important amino acid that is essential for the control of chloride ion channels. When used in place of the amino acid, glutamate, selamectin allows for chloride ions to flow freely into nerve cells. This causes neuromuscular paralysis in the parasites and eventually leads to their deaths.

In addition to killing fleas, ticks, and heartworms- Revolution for Cats also works to kill roundworms, whipworms. While this may seem unfair when compared to its canine counterpart, Revolution for Dogs offers a similarly distinctive protection against sarcoptic mange, a mite that burrows into skin and causes a series of unpleasant symptoms.

Safety Concerns and Additional Considerations

Revolution for Cats & Dogs offers a safe way to protect your pet against a variety of pests; however, this medication is quite strong and requires a prescription from your veterinarian. There are also certain adverse reactions that may occur if Revolution is not used properly. Pets taking Revolution may experience hair discoloration or hair loss and skin irritation at the site of application. Other rare side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, muscle tremors, fever, and more.

Because this product is incredibly potent and requires a prescription, it may not be suitable for some pets. For pets that still need protection against fleas and ticks, Frontline Plus is another topical that works to repel these pests and is available in formulas for both cats and dogs. Other preventives, like K9 Advantix II for Dogs also works to repel mosquitoes, which can help prevent heartworm infestations and the potentially fatal heartworm disease.
