Oddly marketed but effective med
September 8, 2025
It should take about 60 days to fully judge Ursolyx but it does seem to be helping my dog with glomerular disease regain some lost muscle in the 3 weeks she's been taking it. I read the correct dosage is 2mg/kg of dog, so my dog currently needs about 13.5mg of Ursolyx a day. I bought the Large size container because of how sizes are priced. Fortunately, the texture is like a Tootsie Roll so it was easy to cut each 72mg chew into 8 pieces of 9mg each, and then cut some of the 1/8 pieces in half again so my dog is getting the correct dosage for her weight. Their study gave dogs 5x the correct dose with no bad side effects, but I read that "more" ursolic acid is not "better" so it made no sense to overdose her with such an expensive supplement. She loves the taste; no issues feeding it to her. If she gains another pound, I will increase the daily dose to keep it at 2mg/kg of dog. It's a good product, just oddly marketed and too pricey to give in excess of the required dose.
Pros
  • Tasty! Easy to cut into portioned pieces to meet the scientifically determined 2mg/kg canine dosage. Seems to be helping my dog regain lost muscle after a sudden weight loss due to glomerular disease.
Cons
  • Very expensive. To market a 24mg/chew as the correct dose for a 30 lb. dog or a 12 lb. dog or a 6 lb. dog is a stretch. Fortunately the study done to confirm the efficacy of ursolic acid in dogs gives the "correct" dose as 2mg/kg dog so a pet owner can decide which size package to buy and whether or not the pet needs a whole chew or less per day.
